Darwin!!!
By Irina H. and Dirk M.
Our adventure in Darwin
It all started one week ago. Mister Pape came in our class and suggested us all a deal. He was too fast and nobody believed him what he said. “I offer you all a sweepstake. All of you group up to teams and travel to a country I have decided for you. The group who earns the most experience and spends as less money as possible, wins 10.000,-?. It’s a deal from Mr. Dell, he wants to do something for this school’s reputation.”
Silence. Everybody was quiet. And so me and Dirk ended up sitting in a plane to Darwin. Everyone in the class wanted to try, 10.000,-? pocket money weren’t that bad. Our group was the only one who went to Australia. We had to stay there for three days. I needed the money for a car; Dirk needed it for a motorbike. So, I found myself and Dirk sitting in a plane.
“So, what do you know about Darwin?” Dirk asked.
“It’s in Australia” I chuckled. “It has spiders and kangaroos. It’s pretty hot there.”
“It has a population of 120.900; it’s the largest and most populated city in the sparsely peopled Northern Territory. Darwin is really beautiful, you know? There are a lot of clubs and it’s on the coast, there are nice beaches”
“Do you remember how much the ticked had coast?” I asked him and watched at Dirks Clock. It was 00:15 am. Today we had 10 November.
“3921.18,-?. Pretty expensive, huh?” He said and I nodded. It was pure luck that we’ve got the tickets for this price and we were happy that our headmaster paid them.
Some hours pasted, Dirk fell asleep and I slept a little, too. The food on the plane was more than terrible. I already started to miss my family and my house. The seats were uncomfortable, on my left was Dirk, on my right a fat woman who snored loudly. I couldn’t even look into the bull’s-eye.
Finally, after 24 hours of flight we arrived in Darwin. Totally tired and worn out. We needed to find our hotel. We were really happy to know that the hotel was in the middle of Darwin, but first we needed to drive bus, because it was 7 kilometers away from the airport. It was dark and Darwin was shining, but we were too tired to spend our attention to its beauty.
I only remember falling in my own king – size bed when we were finally there. Dirk paid for the room (2 king size beds, bathroom… everything the two of us could need).
My mobile phone rang loudly. “What’s the matter?” I mumbled. I hated my mobile phone. It always rings, when I am asleep. I raised my head from the soft cushion and remembered. “Oh my God! We are in Darwin, Dirk!!! Dirk? Dirk?” Where was he? The bed beside mine was tidy, I was alone in the room. I had to stand up and drink a coffee to wake up properly. I noticed that I fell asleep with my clothes still on. “Great…” I through, went to the bath room and did everything a girl does in her bathroom every morning. Then, I walked out of the room (Of course, I closed it and took the second key with me).
Down, in the cantina I saw Dirk. He was enjoying his breakfast. “Good morning, Irina” he said, still chewing on his fried eggs with bacon.
“Dirk, why didn’t you wake me up?” I asked him,
“I tried! But you didn’t wake up, Irina!” I sighed. “You almost hit me!”
“Sorry, Dirk. You’re right, it’s better not to try waking me up. Where do you get the food here?”
After my class comrade showed me everything in the hotel, I had my breakfast with hot coffee and suggested him to go out.
“Let’s take a look on the city, Dirk.” I said, “We only have three days left”
And so, our adventure took start. Now, I’ll tell you a story about adventures, friendship and fun. About stress and quarreling. About Darwin and its people. About me and Dirk.
The sun blinded me. I found myself wearing a thin T – Shirt and knee – short pants. It was damn hot. I felt like in a desert. Dirk was dressed the same as me. “Let’s buy a map” he suggested
( www.planetware.com/i/map/AUS/darwin-map.jpg that’s the map, found on Google. Just click on it )
We got one at the hotel reception. After looking at it, I decided to go to the botanical gardens. “It’s going to be fun! Let’s go!”
After 15 Minutes – Me and Dirk were driving bus. He counted the money.
“Look, Irina, we gave 160 Euro out for the hotel room. I booked it for the three days we have to spend here. Yesterday and just now we gave 5 Euro away for the bus.”
“We can pay with Euro?!” I asked.
“No. I exchanged the money in Australian Dollar. The woman at the hotel was nice enough to exchange 50 Euro at the shelter.” He said.
“Wow, Dirk. We are a good team. I always forget such important things.” I smiled.
Fifteen minutes later we went to the famous botanical gardens. It was a big, green place. There were really strange plants everywhere, like bottle trees and giant living rocks. Living rocks are plants, which look like mushrooms. They have a grey – brownish color, that’s why people think they’re rocks. But at the park there were giant, colorful living rocks, every one as big as my leg.
“Impressive” Me and Dirk said it at the same time.
“Let’s get out of here, before this rock is getting alive” Dirks jokes weren’t funny, but I still laughed. It’s important to be polite, you know…
Now we had the half day over. The fact, that we had to drive bus so much, was annoying. I should have rented a car, I through. It would be useful right now, after all I have a driver’s license and the amount of money wasn’t limited. Our headmaster promised to pay everything.
“I need a lunch, Irina!” I heard Dirks stomach growl at me. My stomach growled back.
“Uh… let’s find something to eat…” I suggested and pointed with my finger on a fish and chips kebap shop.
“Let’s go in” He said and walked inside it. That’s how we enjoyed our lunch, but then something happened.
Dirk was waiting for me to eat up. I always eat slowly. And besides, I love French fries, they are awesome and I always enjoy them. Then, suddenly I saw something on the floor.
“What’s that, Dirk?” I couldn’t see the black point at his feet probably.
“That? Uh… that’s a… A COCKROACH!!!” He screamed. And before I realized, what he said, I started to scream, too. I am so afraid about every insect I see… and THIS ONE was a giant cockroach!!! I ran excited and so panicked through the whole shop. Dirk Paid and pulled me out of there.
“You saw that fat cockroach! So ugly!!” I almost started to cry.
“Are you afraid of bugs?” Dirk asked.
“Yes, damn it! And spiders. I hate them the most…” I said, still shivering from the shock.
“How can you be afraid of something, that’s afraid of you by itself? I mean, you are so big compared to a cockroach!” We started to quarrel.
“Look, there is a spider on the floor.” He laughed.
“Oh no! Where?” I started to panic again.
“Here…” He pulled the spider on its feet up in the air and showed it to me. I started to scream again. How could he? I’ll never forgive him, I through…
“I would drop that” a strange voice echoed, it was a voice of a grown up man, with a strange accent I never heard before. And then I saw him. He was big, good looking… And so I forgot the spider.
“Boy, it’s a red back! They’re dangerous!” Now it was Dirks turn to scream again, he let the spider fall on the ground. How couldn’t we notice? Red backs are dangerous spiders and if they bite you, you`ll need a doctor right away. They live in Australia, yeah… but in Darwin? Yes. In Darwin, too. It was a little, black spider with a red stripe on its back.
“It’s a young one. It hasn’t learned to be afraid from humans yet. An adult one would bite you immediately.” The young man whose name we didn’t know yet went to us and crushed the spider, which tried to flee, with its feet. “And because it’s a young one, you can kill it with one step. Big spiders like that one can be only killed by fire.” He said in his harsh voice. His eyes were blue as the sky, his hair was dark. “Don’t underestimate Australia!”
“Yes, sir!” I saluted. Dirk laughed. “It’s time to go, Irina”
“Right… whatever… no spiders anymore, okay?” I asked and some pictures of cockroaches and ugly spiders flashed in my head.
“Promise” He said and we both walked off. The good looking man was gone. I could only smile.
Early in the evening: My legs hurt from exploring the streets around the hotel. I found a bar and a club. Well, Dirk found the bar first and enjoyed a cool beer. What else did you expected?
Later, in the room, we stayed in the lobby and I was checking my emails on a computer. The usage of Internet was expensive, but I was so addicted, I needed to write some mails.
“Have you noticed? Everywhere in the city are black people” I whispered.
“I know” Dirk said, “They are Aborigines, the native people of Australia. Over 80% of all people in Darwin are Aborigines, you know?”
“Now I do” I sighed. So, that pretty, blue eyed guy wasn’t Aboriginal. He had white skin. Maybe a tourist like us?
“Let’s get some sleep. Tomorrow I want to see some crocodiles.” Dirk said.
“All right, but only if I can go shopping tomorrow!” The deal was done, I was looking on the sunset through the window.
The next day. This time it was not the mobile telephone, that woke me up. This time it was Dirk, who shake my shoulder violently.
“Wake up, or we’re gonna miss the bus for the crocodiles! Irina!” He fizzled.
“Leave me alone, let me have only five minutes…” I mumbled.
“No five minutes! The crocodiles are hungry and they won’t wait for their breakfast so long!”
“What?” I asked in confusion. “Come on, get dressed ( I only had a T – Shirt on me) )” He said and walked away to the bath. After a half hour I sat totally tired in the bus.
“There are a lot of saltwater crocodiles on the coast. We can watch them.” Dirk finally explained. After we came onto the coast, I was surprised by its beauty. So many left beaches… and the one we visited was so beautiful. The waves were blue, just like in a cartoon, just like someone draw them.
Dirk didn’t care for them. “Look, some people who live here, feed them. That’s why many of them come to the coast. Oh, look! There is one!”
A huge crocodile was lying on the warm sand and was enjoying the golden sunlight. “Don’t come near him.” I warned. Dirk was happy like a little kid, who found his toy. “I won’t.”
We looked after the crocodile for some hours. Then, we walked away. “Actually, I wanted to have a swim. But I have some problems. First, I cannot swim good, second, the crocodile is making me nervous.” I said to Dirk and walked barefoot through the warm sand. He was walking through the water. “Take care, one of your crocodile friends may bite you” I chuckled. “Never” Dirk smirked.
And after another half day, I was entering the hotel room with some shopping bags. Dirk sat in the hotel and enjoyed the presence of the air conditioner. “What’s that?” He asked.
“Presents. For my family” I answered.
“Oh! Right! I need some, too!” He sighed. “You can get some tomorrow.
